EMS is short for 'English Market Selection', a description used in Cuba for over 100 years to identify the quality of cigars designated for the British market. It is the cornerstone of the UK's long established reputation as the world centre for Habanos.

In the early nineties Hunters & Frankau introduced the EMS Stamp, applied to boxes of Havana’s that have passed the UK quality inspection.

By 1997 the colour of the EMS stamps had been updated and the colour now changes annually. (It is for added security that the colour is changed annually) All packs of Cuban cigars selected for sale in the UK domestic market feature the EMS stamp.

The EMS stamp is an important safeguard against a growing tide of counterfeit Cuban cigars coming into the UK.
The Cuban cigar factories have only one contract for the worldwide distribution of Havana’s- Habanos S.A. Similarly Habanos S.A. has just one contract with an importer for the UK, Republic of Ireland, Gibraltar and the Channel Islands- Hunters & Frankau. Hence you can be 100% sure that all boxes bearing the EMS or H&F stamps are genuine.
For the boxes of sealed Havana cigars we sell. a second stamp is applied- 'H&F - Imported Directly from Cuba'. This guarantees that packs have come through proper distribution channels. These H&F stamps are applied to the boxes of Habanos destined for Travel Retail and our export markets (Republic of Ireland, Gibraltar, Channel Islands).
